Imperial College London&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Britain\u2019s wind farms hit a major milestone&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/electricinsights.co.uk\/#\/dashboard?start=2022-05-25\">back in May<\/a>, producing more than 20 GW for the first time.&nbsp;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.energylivenews.com\/2022\/05\/30\/uk-wind-power-sets-a-new-record\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Grid reported peak output hitting 19.916 GW<\/a>, but our data which combines National Grid and Elexon data registered the total as 20.002 GW.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the first half of 2022, thirty of the records that we track were broken, mostly relating to renewable and low carbon generation hitting new highs, and fossil fuel output reaching new lows.&nbsp;&nbsp;Renewable energy sources (wind, solar, biomass and hydro) provided&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/electricinsights.co.uk\/#\/dashboard?period=1-month&amp;start=2022-02-01\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">more than half the country\u2019s electricity<\/a>&nbsp;throughout the month of February, and peaked at an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/electricinsights.co.uk\/#\/dashboard?start=2022-06-26\">instantaneous share of 73%<\/a>&nbsp;of the country\u2019s demand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Britain saw its cleanest ever electricity on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/electricinsights.co.uk\/#\/dashboard?start=2022-01-01\">New Year\u2019s Day<\/a>, with the generation mix producing only 55 grams of CO<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;per kWh, the lowest ever for a day.&nbsp;&nbsp;This means 1,550 tonnes of CO<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;were produced by the electricity sector that day.&nbsp;&nbsp;This compares to 6,200 tCO<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/electricinsights.co.uk\/#\/dashboard?start=2021-01-01\">New Year\u2019s Day last year<\/a>, and a staggering 21,100 tCO<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/electricinsights.co.uk\/#\/dashboard?start=2009-01-01\">the first day of 2009<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Given how electricity prices have risen, you might expect that the price records would have tumbled, but only the monthly-average price hit an all-time high.&nbsp;&nbsp;Extremely high but short-lived price spikes are common in normal times, as they are about acute shortages of capacity in specific hours.&nbsp;&nbsp;The current situation is a chronic increase in fuel prices which affects all hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The tables below look over the past decade (2009 to 2022) and report the record output and share of electricity generation, plus sustained averages over a day, a month and a calendar year.<sup>[1]<\/sup>&nbsp;&nbsp;Cells highlighted in blue are records that were broken in the first half of 2022.&nbsp;&nbsp;Each number links to the date it occurred on the Electric Insights website, so these records can be explored visually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-2 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:100%\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-1 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:100%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"4510\" height=\"10670\" src=\"https:\/\/reports.electricinsights.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Figure-7.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1724\" srcset=\"https:\/\/reports.electricinsights.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Figure-7.png 4510w, https:\/\/reports.electricinsights.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Figure-7-127x300.png 127w, https:\/\/reports.electricinsights.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Figure-7-433x1024.png 433w, https:\/\/reports.electricinsights.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Figure-7-768x1817.png 768w, https:\/\/reports.electricinsights.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Figure-7-649x1536.png 649w, https:\/\/reports.electricinsights.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Figure-7-866x2048.png 866w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 4510px) 100vw, 4510px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>[1]<\/sup>&nbsp;The annual records relate to full calendar years, so cover the period of 2009 to 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>[2]<\/sup>&nbsp;Note that Britain has no inter-seasonal electricity storage, so we only report on half-hourly and daily records.&nbsp;
