Since its peak in 2005, demand has fallen by more than a fifth \u2013 often seen as a sign of wider decline, deindustrialisation and outsourcing. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/delivering-ai-growth-zones\/delivering-ai-growth-zones\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Now with Artificial Intelligence poised to reshape the economy<\/a>, the data centres which power AI models have contributed to raising Britain\u2019s electricity demand by 1.7% in 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AI presents a major growth opportunity, <a href=\"https:\/\/ukstories.microsoft.com\/features\/ai-could-boost-uk-gdp-by-550-billion-by-2035-research-shows\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">expected to boost UK GDP by \u00a3550 billion over the coming decade<\/a>. Behind the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ofcom.org.uk\/media-use-and-attitudes\/online-habits\/from-apps-to-ai-search-how-the-uk-goes-online-in-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">rapid increase in AI assistants<\/a> are data centres: <a href=\"https:\/\/reports.electricinsights.co.uk\/?p=2325\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">huge and power-hungry computer clusters<\/a> concentrated around London. They currently <a href=\"https:\/\/researchbriefings.files.parliament.uk\/documents\/CBP-10315\/CBP-10315.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">consume 2.5% of Britain\u2019s electricity<\/a>, more than the city of Birmingham.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Britain\u2019s electricity demand is also being driven upwards by electrifying transport and heat. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smmt.co.uk\/vehicle-data\/car-registrations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Electric vehicle sales grew by 27%<\/a> to reach 475,000 pure-battery vehicles plus 225,000 plug-in hybrids, meaning one in three cars sold in 2025 was electric. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/mcs-certified_as-we-await-the-final-installation-total-activity-7414225474207236096-n2Q6\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Heat pump sales grew more modestly<\/a>, by just 4%, held back by Britain\u2019s high electricity prices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Data centres are growing much faster, already consuming <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/crs-product\/R48646\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">5% of national demand in the US<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/environment\/2025\/06\/10\/data-centres-accounted-for-more-than-fifth-of-irelands-electricity-usage-last-year\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">20% of Ireland\u2019s electricity<\/a>. This is wreaking havoc on electricity systems: American firms are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2025-12-02\/us-eyes-backup-generators-from-walmart-in-quest-for-more-power\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">scrambling to build polluting diesel and gas generators<\/a> to meet growing demand, and <a href=\"https:\/\/datacentrenews.uk\/story\/ireland-unveils-strict-new-rules-for-data-centre-power-use\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Ireland placed a three-year ban on new data centres<\/a> to protect consumers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To sidestep these problems, the Government <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/delivering-ai-growth-zones\/delivering-ai-growth-zones\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">launched five AI growth zones<\/a>: areas with good grid connections, clean firm generation sources, and proximity to cities. Yet, with UK data centre demand <a href=\"https:\/\/researchbriefings.files.parliament.uk\/documents\/CBP-10315\/CBP-10315.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">forecast to quadruple by 2030<\/a>, more zones are likely to be needed to keep pace and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tomshardware.com\/tech-industry\/artificial-intelligence\/u-s-electricity-grid-stretches-thin-as-data-centers-rush-to-turn-on-onsite-generators-meta-xai-and-other-tech-giants-race-to-solve-ais-insatiable-power-appetite\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">avoid stretching the grid thin<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Britain\u2019s electricity demand has gone from falling faster than in any other major country, to now being middle of the pack. Britain\u2019s turnaround is set to accelerate, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c70ekknr2rwo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">the CCC targets<\/a> rapid rises in heat pump installations and electric car sales.
