Since construction of Hinkley Point C began,\u00a0Britain has installed nearly 7 GW of batteries. Hinkley\u00a0Point\u2019s 3.2 GW of reactors will not come online until\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/2026\/feb\/20\/hinkley-point-c-delayed-to-2030-as-costs-climb-to-35bn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">at\u00a0least 2030 (five years late)<\/a>, whereas new\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.renewableuk.com\/news-and-resources\/blog\/why-battery-energy-storage-systems-are-crucial-to-the-uk-s-clean-power-future\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">battery projects\u00a0can be built in a matter of months.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Britain\u2019s battery capacity has risen from 10 MW to nearly&nbsp;7 GW, overtaking the headline capacity of the entire&nbsp;nuclear fleet in under a decade. Investors follow price signals, and battery\u00a0revenues shift quickly with market regulations and price\u00a0spreads. Battery revenues\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/global.oup.com\/academic\/product\/monetizing-energy-storage-9780192888174?cc=gb&amp;lang=en&amp;\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">vary by one-quarter from year to\u00a0year,<\/a> so today\u2019s hottest market can soon become crowded\u00a0and less attractive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Turkey shows how quickly the race can shift. It now has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2026\/apr\/08\/turkey-ahead-eu-battery-storage-fossil-fuel-crisis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Europe\u2019s largest pipeline of battery projects<\/a>, beating\u00a0Germany and Italy combined. This surge reflects a fast-growing power system turning to wind and solar to cut\u00a0imports. Since 2022, new wind and solar projects have had\u00a0to add battery capacity equal to their generation capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Britain is taking the opposite approach: rather than\u00a0mandating battery construction, the market decides how\u00a0much to build. Tighter co-location or balancing\u00a0requirements could make wind and solar more compatible\u00a0with system operations, but could risk stalling investment.\u00a0The Government is leaning towards market signals, with\u00a0the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/clean-flexibility-roadmap\/clean-flexibility-roadmap\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Clean Flexibility Roadmap<\/a>\u00a0aiming to remove barriers\u00a0and improve price signals for storage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Energy storage helps Britain use more of the electricity it&nbsp;generates. Batteries respond to short-term swings in&nbsp;supply and demand within seconds, while pumped hydro&nbsp;provides large reservoirs to deliver electricity during longer&nbsp;periods of system stress. Together, they store surplus wind&nbsp;and solar to cut curtailment, and release it when demand&nbsp;peaks to smooth out prices.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To support the Clean Power targets, Britain must\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/clean-power-2030-action-plan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">more than\u00a0triple its current storage capacity by 2030.<\/a> After building\u00a05 GW of batteries in the last five years, Britain now has five\u00a0years to build the next 20 GW.
