{"id":368,"date":"2020-10-16T13:21:02","date_gmt":"2020-10-16T13:21:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/reports.electricinsights.uk\/?p=368"},"modified":"2020-11-02T15:24:50","modified_gmt":"2020-11-02T15:24:50","slug":"capacity-and-production-statistics-12","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/reports.electricinsights.co.uk\/?p=368","title":{"rendered":"Capacity and production statistics"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>by Dr Iain Staffell &#8211; Imperial College London\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>This quarter saw some significant changes from the first three months of 2018.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Winter was particularly mild, with average temperatures 2\u00b0C higher than last year, meaning demand was down by 6%. Nuclear output is 16% lower than last year as five reactors are down for maintenance, including\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/uk.reuters.com\/article\/uk-britain-nuclear\/edf-extends-outages-at-british-nuclear-plant-where-cracks-were-found-idUKKBN1OH1HR\">two extended outages due to cracks being found<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Coal output was also down by two-thirds, and no coal was burnt for electricity for 581 hours over the quarter (27% of the time). Zero-coal hours have shot up from 0 in Q1 2017, and just 71 in Q1 2018. As we predicted last quarter,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/electricinsights.co.uk\/#\/dashboard?period=1-year&amp;start=2018-04-01&amp;&amp;_k=58m69y\">Britain\u2019s solar panels have now beaten coal over the past 12 months<\/a>&nbsp;\u2013 supplying 1.3 GW on average versus 1.1 GW. The warm sunny spells meant we saw midday periods when solar was the second largest source of electricity&nbsp;<em>during February<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Power prices fell by almost a third from \u00a361\/MWh at the end of last year to \u00a343\/MWh in March. Lower fuel prices, and high wind output helped to suppress prices, even though&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/eda3c1a6-5ba1-11e9-9dde-7aedca0a081a\">the price of carbon emissions rose to a 10-year high<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Outages meant Britain\u2019s nuclear reactors only ran at 64% of nominal capacity. In comparison, Britain\u2019s interconnectors were the most heavily utilised technology, averaging 71%. For example,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/collections\/energy-trends\">BEIS Energy Trends<\/a>&nbsp;records an additional 0.7 GW of hydro, 0.6 GW of biomass and 3 GW of small waste-to-energy plants. These plants and their output are not visible to the electricity transmission system and so cannot be reported on here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2: We include an estimate of the installed capacity of smaller storage devices which are not monitored by the electricity market operator.
