{"id":602,"date":"2020-10-14T16:30:32","date_gmt":"2020-10-14T16:30:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/reports.electricinsights.uk\/?p=602"},"modified":"2021-03-05T14:08:48","modified_gmt":"2021-03-05T14:08:48","slug":"a-low-carbon-christmas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/reports.electricinsights.co.uk\/?p=602","title":{"rendered":"A low carbon Christmas"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>by Dr Iain Staffell &#8211; Imperial College London&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2016 saw Britain\u2019s cleanest Christmas: up to 81% of electricity was supplied by low-carbon sources as Santa delivered his presents.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The share of nuclear, biomass, hydro, wind and solar did not fall below 60% during the three days between Christmas Eve and Boxing Day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Over the three months, the average share of low carbon electricity was down from 50% in Q3 to 40% in Q4, due to higher demand (met by gas and coal) and the collapse of French imports. This share was especially high over the Christmas period due to low demand combined with high winds. Electricity demand was reduced as workplaces shut down for the holidays, whilst Storm Barbara hit Britain with 90 mph winds from the 23<sup>rd<\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At their peak, wind farms met 37% of British demand \u2013 powering around 15 million people, or everyone (and everything) north of Nottingham.
